Navrathiri, Golus and Sundal - Memory trip down the lane
It's Navrathiri time for the next 10 days or so and as usual poojas, vathillai pakku visits, small little gifts, name sake Golus along with the silk Sari mamis must be busy back home though the intensity and the fun of olden days no longer seems to be there. Just thought of recapping my memories of this lovely festival celebrated by our community

Just thought of recapping my memories of this lovely festival celebrated by our community
During Mid 70's when I used to be 5-6 years I remember the Golu at my native place Arni which had a traditional 7 step golu with the added flavor of 'Bommalattam' from behind the old sarees doubled up as a kind of curtain for the kids and different varieties of sundal and what was the flavour of the day was a huge surprise debated in hushed tones by the Mami's so that duplication doesn’t take place. A dug up small water tank called 'kulam'was an added attraction. When we came to Chennai it became bit subdued though the mela continued with multiple visits to invited places and slowly but steadily colorful cards printed in style became the source of invitation instead of simple post cards and the gifts also became bit costlier as a status symbol moving away from the traditional blouse bits
But the best part was during my Bahrain tenure when all the husbands became glorified Chauffeurs driving the silk sari mamis after coming back from office to at least 5-7 houses per day and by the fourth or fifth day the stomach had gone for a toss reverberating with the after effects of the sundal smell all over the place and we used to shudder at the thought of managing the balance days. Some houses still used to convert their hall shelf with some Teddies and Barbies as a poor substitute for the actual Golu toys and I remember one particular house who always hosted a grand buffet for the Golu and that was the last stop to finish off the dinner and head back home tired and exhausted while the women folk used to have a quick analysis of the gifts for the day
In Dubai as is the case with the place itself there is more hype with appointments confirmed over mail /ecards or cell phones and there is hardly any trace of golu at all in any of the houses. It became more of a social visit for the close friend’s houses in the midst of chaotic traffic and no way more than 2 houses could be covered with the only point of interest being what the gift was supposed to be and when we would go back home.
So Navratiri slowly but steadily like any other traditional festival seems to be losing it's charm and getting accustomed and adjusted to the modern day time pressure and stress with it's own innovations.

We used to conduct a survey for the "best sundal of the day" amongst various houses..Miss those wonderful days.

During Mid 70's when I used to be 5-6 years ?????? - How is this possible??..Can we know ur year of birth pls....
Ishu
But for the tradition of navarathiri who would have patronised the doll making people and their art.
Behind every hindu festival there are certain agenda and reason in support of them

Hey Ram.....
my 1'st comment on u'r blog.....this post really stuck me coz.....my sister was like a champion and architect of our Gollu in those days and she was so innovative and used to bring all her creative ability to decide on the theme for every year's Park of our Gollu and i still remember her doing the Olympics for 1 year in her own style(shame though we din't have handycams those days) and after she got married I continued the tradition for a few years with even tryin to fit in Princess Diana'tragic end in one of the Gollu's(as it may sound strange I had a lot of opposition for this) and most mamis dint even have a clue of what it was.....but like i said full credit and hats off to my sister who really made us feel motivated(just to get some sand or stones from a near by park) to make our PARK the best.....and i still cant forget one of my athimber's(equivalent of uncle for those who still cant figure it out) enthusiaism....he was almost 50 and he would have so much of interest and his PARK was the best of all time...dunno if he's still doin it.....but as u've rightly said they have to be called the gud ol' days when we still can continue the tradition..........to maybe pass on to the next generation....:)...and just to bring back those gud ol days am postin a link to the snaps of one of our recent Gollu's and the full credit goes to my Mom, who did it all by herself...as even I was not at home tht year.......http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/karthiksuresh_2000/album?.dir=/mail
sorry folks....herz the right Link to the Gollu photos that i had mentioned in my last comment....
Dear Ram
I too remember those good old young days during navarathiri, I used sing very well, and during Navarathiri relatives and friends made me sing before they can offer sundal, it was a sort of deal sundal for song and the famous song I used to sing is "Paalutti valrtha kili" from Gauravam everyone used to enjoy, it used be real fun as you said most of the time the variety from "Kondakadalai" to Pattani (especially on saraswathy Pooja day will fill our stomach and also the famous PUTTU which used to be a delicacy and also Karamani, those good old days are real great memeories to recall and cherish and we will never get back again, here in Dubai normally becuae of weekday schedules house visits extend upto 11 AM where some of the houses server samosa kaju kathili and if we are lucky we get sundal, normally they call all families together on one day so we can socialise together, singing songs is there but not to be copared with those yesteryears back home, I distinctly remember that I have visited the famous Gemini famil's GOLU at Gemini house for atleast 15 years continuously and in one particiular year they had replica of Paramacharya in wax which was a great attraction, and even film celbrities used to attend, I think after their family moved to Adayar after selling Gemini house there was less pomp and glamour, with Gemini house becoming a Bharat Vilas each of the five daughter's have married diffferent caste and religion no longer there was charm in Navarathiri although Balu Iyer and mami still was doing at a tradition as Vasan Mamai is still alive. I think even If we go back to our home town we cannot rejoice Navarathiri the same way it was in th epast
Interestingly, my grand mother used to say, "these days Golus are not like olden days". The year 1970! I guess it is the yearning for the long-gone spring of our lives manifesting itself.
